Delta Police Probe Officers Over POS Extortion

The Delta State Police Command has initiated disciplinary proceedings against two officers accused of extorting money from a motorist, following the circulation of a viral video showing the incident in Asaba.

The officers, identified as an inspector and a corporal attached to ‘C’ Division, were reportedly seen collecting money through a Point of Sale (POS) machine within a police station—an action that has drawn widespread criticism.

Reacting to the development, the command described the conduct as “embarrassing,” “unprofessional,” and “conduct unbecoming of police officers.”

It further condemned the incident, stating that “no citizen deserved to be treated in such a manner by the police,” and emphasized that the behaviour of the officers was “inexcusable and unpardonable.”

The Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the command’s adherence to the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, which prohibits extortion and the use of POS machines or any electronic payment platforms within police formations.

He stated that “no officer is authorised to demand or receive money from any member of the public under any guise”.

According to the command, an orderly room trial has already commenced for the officers involved, with assurances that the outcome of the disciplinary process will be made public.

Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance on misconduct, the commissioner warned that “extortion and abuse of office will not be tolerated,” urging officers to carry out their duties professionally and treat citizens with respect.

He also reminded personnel to uphold “the tenets of professional policing” and respect the fundamental rights of citizens as guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution, noting that the action taken in this case is intended to serve as a deterrent.

The command commended members of the public for bringing the incident to light, praising their vigilance and encouraging continued reporting of misconduct.

It assured that it remains committed to “discipline, accountability, and building public trust.”Delta Police Probe Officers Over POS Extortion in Asaba
