A reprisal attack by suspected bandits has left at least 11 people dead in Kankia Local Government Area, raising fresh concerns over security in the region.
The incident was confirmed by the state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu’azu, who explained that the violence occurred after an earlier attempt by the armed group was successfully foiled by security forces.
According to Mu’azu, intelligence reports had indicated that a known bandit leader, Mohammadu Fulani, was mobilising fighters and advancing toward key locations, including strategic bridges in the area. Acting on the information, a joint security team led by the Divisional Police Officer in Kankia intercepted the group, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.
“Several bandits were neutralised during the operation, while eight motorcycles and rustled cattle were recovered,” Mu’azu said, noting that the operation was supported by credible intelligence provided by local residents.
However, the situation escalated when the attackers regrouped and launched a second assault later in the day. The renewed attack targeted Gwalgoro Village in Gyaza/Kunduru Ward, where 11 civilians were killed in what authorities described as a retaliatory strike.
Mu’azu condemned the killings, describing the incident as a “cowardly act of terror,” and extended condolences to the families of those affected.
He also commended the efforts of security operatives for preventing the initial attack from causing greater damage and urged residents to remain alert and continue sharing timely information with security agencies.
