A passenger has been killed after bandits attacked a bus linked to the Sokoto State Transport Authority along the dangerous Mayanchi route in Zamfara State.
The vehicle, travelling from Abuja to Sokoto with 16 passengers, was ambushed by armed attackers who forced it to stop. During the incident, one passenger attempting to escape was shot dead, while others were reportedly abducted and taken to an unknown location.
Security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, have begun efforts to track the attackers and rescue those taken, using the passenger manifest already provided.
Authorities confirmed the bus was privately owned but operating under the state transport scheme.
“The 18-seated vehicle intercepted is leased to the transport agency by a transporter in the state,” said Bala Kokani.
The attack has intensified concerns over growing insecurity along key northwest highways, especially the Abuja–Zamfara–Sokoto route, known for repeated bandit attacks.
