At least 150 suspected bandits are feared to have drowned after a boat conveying them capsized in the Sabon Gida area of Sokoto State.
The incident was disclosed by a counter-insurgency and security analyst in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, in a post shared on X.
He said the tragedy occurred on Saturday evening when the boat, carrying a large number of armed men, overturned while attempting to cross a water body in the area.
According to him, the group was travelling in large numbers when the vessel suddenly capsized, throwing all occupants into the water.
“Preliminary information suggests that many of them could not swim, leading to heavy casualties,” he said.
He added that early reports indicated that none of the occupants survived the incident.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to officially confirm the development.
