Ikeja Electric Blames Lagos Power Outage on Reduced Grid Supply

Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) has explained that the persistent power outages being experienced across Lagos are largely due to a drop in electricity allocation from the national grid.

In a statement shared via its official X platform on Friday, the company acknowledged the inconvenience caused to customers and apologised for the ongoing disruptions affecting several parts of its network.

“We sincerely regret the ongoing power supply challenges currently affecting some areas within our network due to reduced power allocation from the grid,” the company stated.

According to the distribution company, the reduced allocation has made it necessary to implement measures aimed at managing the available supply more efficiently. One of those measures is controlled load distribution, also known as load shedding, which helps ensure that the limited electricity available is shared across different areas.

“As part of efforts to maintain grid stability and ensure equitable distribution of available power, temporary load shedding is being implemented across affected feeders and locations,” it added.

Ikeja Electric further noted that it is actively engaging stakeholders across the electricity value chain in a bid to improve supply and minimise the disruption to customers.

The situation highlights the broader challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector. Electricity shortages have continued to affect Lagos and other parts of the country, with gas supply constraints playing a significant role in limiting power generation capacity.

This comes even as state-level initiatives aimed at reducing dependence on the national grid are being introduced, signalling ongoing efforts to address long-standing issues in the sector.
