Mohamed Salah has opened up about a key decision early in his career, explaining why he chose to go against the advice of José Mourinho during his time at Chelsea FC.
Reflecting on his relationship with the Portuguese coach, Salah spoke positively about Mourinho, describing him as one of the most influential managers he has worked with.
“I remember I had a conversation with Jose, and he’s a lovely guy. I love him. One of the best coaches I have had in my life, and our relationship is good now. So I don’t want people to think that I’m hating him or something,” Salah told StanSport.
Despite that respect, Salah admitted he chose not to follow Mourinho’s suggestion regarding his future at Chelsea. According to him, the manager had wanted him to either remain at the club or take a temporary move elsewhere within the United Kingdom.
“No, I love him. And he told me, ‘I want you to stay or just go somewhere on loan, then come back, but in the UK because I want you.’ I said no. I want to see myself away now.”
At the time, Salah felt the pressure at Stamford Bridge was too intense and believed a fresh start abroad would be better for his development.
“There’s too much pressure on me. I want to go to Italy. I want to play there, and I don’t want to go on loan and come back to a club.”
Salah initially joined ACF Fiorentina on loan, where he began to rediscover his form, before securing a permanent move to AS Roma for the 2015/16 season.
