UEFA has sanctioned SL Benfica with a fine and a suspended partial stadium closure following a racist incident during their Champions League playoff clash with Real Madrid.
The controversy arose during the match in Portugal, where Benfica supporters were accused of engaging in racist behaviour. The situation escalated after Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior alleged that Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni directed racist remarks toward him.
Following an investigation, UEFA confirmed that disciplinary action would be taken against Benfica due to the conduct of their fans.
In an official statement, UEFA said: “To fine Benfica €40,000 and to order the partial closure of Benfica’s stadium.”
The governing body also imposed an additional €8,000 fine for the use of a laser pointer by supporters, as well as €25,000 for the throwing of objects during the match.
Furthermore, Benfica assistant coach Machado has been handed a one-match suspension as part of the disciplinary measures.
