Trump Envoy Suggests Italy Replace Iran at 2026 FIFA World Cup

A senior envoy to Donald Trump has suggested that FIFA consider replacing Iran national football team with Italy national football team at the 2026 World Cup.

The proposal, reported by the Financial Times, was made by Paolo Zampolli, who described it as a “dream” to see Italy—four-time champions—feature in the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Zampolli said the idea had already been raised with both Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

“I confirm I have suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup. I’m an Italian native, and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a US-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion,” he said.

Italy did not qualify for the tournament after losing on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the playoffs, marking their third straight absence from the competition.

Meanwhile, Iran’s participation has drawn attention amid ongoing geopolitical tensions involving the United States and Israel.

Despite this, Infantino has maintained that Iran will take part in the tournament in line with the official draw.
