A former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has cautioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against any attempt to impose a single candidate on Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.
Kwankwaso made the remarks in a statement shared via his verified X account, urging the electoral body to uphold democratic principles by allowing citizens freely choose their leaders across different political parties.
“Today, I joined leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other committed democrats at a world press conference to strongly condemn the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC’s brazen and unacceptable partisanship,” he wrote.
“I fully endorse the position of the gathering: In 2027, Nigerians must be allowed to freely choose their leaders from a diverse range of political parties.
“The electoral umpire has no right to impose a single candidacy on Africa’s largest and most vibrant democracy.”
His comments come amid growing political discussions around electoral fairness and transparency as the country looks ahead to the next general elections
