A group known as Lagos State Prominent Indigenes has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to restrict the 2027 governorship race to qualified Lagos indigenes.
The group said the move is necessary to promote fairness, equality, and inclusiveness in the leadership of the state.
This position was made known during a technical committee meeting held on March 18, 2026, where members also expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term bid.
According to the group, by 2027, key leadership positions in Lagos State — including Governor, Deputy Governor, and Speaker of the House of Assembly — should be occupied by indigenes of the state.
In a statement signed by its Convener, Adesunbo Onitiri, the group explained that the demand is aimed at ensuring equity, preserving local identity, and encouraging greater participation of indigenes in governance.
They also outlined requirements for governorship aspirants, stating that such individuals must have verifiable Lagos ancestry, sound educational background, and strong leadership experience in either the public or private sector.
The group further emphasized that aspirants must possess good character and have no record of corruption or criminal conduct.
It added that prospective candidates should demonstrate discipline, integrity, and tangible achievements both within and beyond Lagos State.
The statement also noted that aspirants must uphold family and societal values, while showing the ability to collaborate effectively to drive meaningful development in the state.
The group concluded by stating its readiness to engage with all qualified aspirants in order to identify and support those capable of advancing Lagos State and serving its people effectively.
