Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has added her voice to growing demands for the removal of Joash Amupitan as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, citing concerns over alleged partisanship.
Yesufu made her position known in a post on X, where she praised increasing civic engagement among Nigerians while reflecting on the evolving political climate.
She wrote: “I love how active Nigerians have become! #ActiveCitizens
“I always focus on the little wins. They snowball into the big wins.
“Some years ago, Amupitan would have gotten away with what he tried to do.”
According to her, recent developments show a shift in public accountability, making it more difficult for public officials to act without scrutiny.
She went further to demand that the INEC chairman step aside, stressing that the situation now requires decisive action.
“At this stage it becomes mandatory that #AmupitanMustGo. My party is not here to play!”
Yesufu also revealed that she would be unable to attend her party’s upcoming convention due to prior international commitments.
“The most painful part of all of this for me is that I will not be in the country for my FIRST party convention.
“I have accepted months ago to be at a workshop in Brazil. ADC Arise.”
Her comments come amid increasing political tensions and scrutiny surrounding the leadership of INEC, with various stakeholders raising concerns over the commission’s neutrality.
