A flight attendant working for Dutch airline KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has tested negative for hantavirus after being hospitalised in Amsterdam with mild symptoms, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The crew member was reportedly tested after coming into contact with a passenger linked to a deadly hantavirus outbreak connected to the MV Hondius cruise ship.
Speaking to AFP, a spokesperson for the World Health Organization confirmed that the flight attendant’s result came back negative.
The infected passenger, a Dutch woman, had boarded a KLM flight from Johannesburg to the Netherlands on April 25 but was removed before take-off after crew members noticed her medical condition.
KLM said the woman later died in a Johannesburg hospital on April 26 and subsequently tested positive for hantavirus.
She was reportedly the wife of the first victim linked to the outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, which departed Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1 en route to Cape Verde.
So far, three deaths have been connected to the outbreak, while authorities continue monitoring passengers and crew across several countries.
