The United States Department of State on Monday warned about a potential threat targeting American facilities and schools in Nigeria, advising US citizens to remain cautious and take safety precautions.
“The US embassy in Abuja informs US citizens of a possible terrorist threat against US facilities and US affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the notice stated.
Officials also encouraged Americans to stay alert and adopt safety measures in their daily activities.
“Increasing awareness of your surroundings, avoiding predictable routines, and reviewing general security precautions with your family can help reduce your risk,” it said.
The United States Embassy Abuja did not provide details about the origin of the reported threat.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump had on Christmas Day ordered US bombings in Nigeria, saying the strikes were aimed at jihadist groups.
The military action followed comments by Trump claiming that Christians were being persecuted in Africa’s most populous country, a view that remains disputed in a nation that has experienced widespread violence affecting both Christians and Muslims.
The security warning in Nigeria also comes at a time of broader global concern raised by the United States after Washington and Israel launched attacks on Iran, which has since carried out missile and drone strikes against neighboring countries aligned with the United States.
