Tinubu Approves Police Academy Campus, ₦15bn Grant

President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, located in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

In addition to the approval, the President also sanctioned a take-off grant of ₦15 billion to support the development of the institution. The announcement was made in a statement released on Monday by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga.

The decision is in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which allows for the expansion of the academy—currently based in Wudil, Kano State—into multiple campuses across the country.

“The intervention fund will be sourced from the TetFund 2026 allocation to finance priority infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets,” the statement partly read.

The choice of Erinja as the location for the new campus followed recommendations from a high-level consultative meeting involving key stakeholders in the education and security sectors.

Participants included the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission.

The discussions focused on factors such as student intake capacity, funding sustainability, academic quality assurance, and the long-term operational needs of the Nigerian Police Force, particularly as recruitment efforts continue to expand.

“President Tinubu believes the expansion will strengthen institutional governance, modern policing education, and national security,” it added.

The approval comes months after the President declared a nationwide security emergency in response to rising cases of attacks and abductions across the country. As part of that move, he authorized increased recruitment into both the police and the military, including plans for the police to enlist an additional 20,000 officers.

In a statement personally signed in November 2025, Tinubu also approved the nationwide upgrade of police training facilities and permitted the use of selected National Youth Service Corps camps as temporary training centres.

He further directed that officers withdrawn from VIP protection duties should undergo “crash training” to improve their effectiveness when redeployed to areas facing security challenges.

The establishment of the new academy campus is expected to enhance training capacity and support broader efforts to reform and strengthen Nigeria’s policing system.
