Putin Backs Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran Supreme Leader

Russian President Vladimir Putin has voiced his support for Mojtaba Khamenei following his confirmation as the new Supreme Leader of Iran.

In a statement issued by the Kremlin, Putin reaffirmed his support for Tehran, promising that Russia “will remain a reliable partner of the Islamic Republic.”

Putin noted that Mojtaba has taken on this responsibility “when Iran is confronting armed aggression,” stating that his leadership in such a high position will demand significant courage and commitment.

The Russian leader expressed his belief that the 56-year-old Mojtaba will honorably carry on his father’s legacy and bring the Iranian people together “in the face of severe trials.”

Putin offered his best wishes for success in addressing “the difficult tasks ahead,” along with wishes for good health and a strong spirit. President Masoud Pezeshkian also remarked that the appointment would serve to bolster national unity.

Mojtaba takes over from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who served in the role for 37 years before being killed on February 28 during the initial joint strikes by the United States and Israel.

The Fatemiyoun Brigade has already pledged its loyalty to Mojtaba. This group, primarily made up of Afghan fighters and organized by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, vowed to remain steadfast alongside Iran and its regional allies.

On Monday, TASS reported that the Russian government is drafting a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East.

The draft conveys “deep concern over the current military escalation” within the region and beyond, urging all involved parties to “immediately stop their military activities.”

Moscow is calling for the conflicting nations to avoid further escalation and is encouraging a swift return to negotiations through political and diplomatic channels.
