The Oyo State Government has confirmed a case of Lassa fever at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, triggering immediate emergency response measures.
The case involved a 44-year-old woman who was treated at the facility but died on April 11, 2026. Laboratory results confirming Lassa fever were received two days later.
Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, said the state activated its response system promptly, including the establishment of an Incident Management System to coordinate containment efforts.
Authorities have begun tracking all contacts linked to the case while ensuring safe burial procedures.
Residents have been urged to seek medical care immediately if they notice symptoms such as persistent fever, weakness, vomiting, bleeding, or breathing difficulties, with officials stressing that early treatment improves survival chances.
The government also highlighted preventive measures, including maintaining hygiene, storing food safely, and preventing rodent infestation.
Health authorities assured the public that surveillance has been intensified and the situation remains under control.
