Tony Nyiam, a retired army officer, has characterized the existing framework of the Nigeria Police Force as obsolete, arguing that its original design was intended to exert control over a colonized population rather than to serve citizens within a democratic framework.
Nyiam shared these views during an appearance on Arise Television this Monday.
“The policing system inherited from the colonial era remains largely unchanged and is no longer suitable for modern Nigeria,” he remarked.
In his view, the current structure was established to enforce authority over the public during the era of colonial rule, rather than to provide security focused on the needs of the community.
Nyiam contended that the highly centralized nature of the police force has hindered its ability to effectively manage the country’s escalating security issues.
The retired officer emphasized the urgent necessity for a thorough overhaul of the policing system to bring it into alignment with Nigeria’s federal structure and its democratic values.
He urged policymakers to re-examine the current policing model and implement reforms that would ensure the system is more responsive, accountable, and capable of protecting lives and property throughout the nation.
