The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has stepped in to provide a lifeline to shop owners following a devastating blaze at the Akatumosa Market in the Ilesa West local government area of Osun State.
The distribution of these essential supplies, which took place on March 5, 2026, was spearheaded by NEMA’s Ibadan Operations Office.
The mission was clear: to soften the harsh economic blow dealt to local entrepreneurs by the fire. This move underscores the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to standing by disaster victims and helping them get back on their feet.
In an official update from the agency, Barrister Aderigbigbe Bukola, the General Manager of the Osun State Emergency Management Agency (OSEMA), spoke at the event to remind traders of the importance of staying alert to potential hazards.
He pointed out that adopting better safety habits is the best way to prevent a repeat of such a tragedy.
The relief efforts were officially launched by Mr. Kadiri Olanrewaju, who heads the NEMA Ibadan office. He urged the recipients to rethink how they prepare for and react to emergencies.
“While relief materials provide support, they cannot fully compensate for the losses suffered by the victims,” he said.
Olanrewaju also stressed that setting up Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs) is vital for catching risks early and coordinating quick responses at the community level. Representing the Governor of Osun State, Hon. Eniola Fakeye, the Special Adviser on Disaster Management, praised NEMA for its rapid arrival on the scene.
She also highlighted the importance of taking early and active steps to prevent and manage disaster risks in communities across the state.
The event saw a significant turnout of local leaders, including the Chairman of the Osun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Ibukun Fadipe, along with the Chairman of Ilesa West, various market heads, and security personnel.
The traders who benefited from the exercise expressed their deep gratitude to NEMA for the timely assistance and pledged to make the most of the items provided.
