Lawyer Urges Tinubu to Consider Resignation Over Insecurity

A Nigerian lawyer, Maduabuchi Idam, has called on President Bola Tinubu to consider resignation if the country’s security challenges continue to escalate beyond control.

In a statement released on Saturday, Idam argued that stepping down should not be viewed as unusual, but rather as a legitimate course of action if it becomes necessary to safeguard the lives of Nigerians.

While acknowledging the complexity of the security situation, he questioned the effectiveness of the current administration’s strategy since assuming office. According to him, the government’s approach appears largely unchanged from that of previous administrations.

“Unfortunately, the President’s strategy has not changed from that of his predecessors. It remains the old doctrinal security template, predicated solely on manual combat of insecurity, which is ill-suited to the complexities of modern security challenges in Nigeria,” he said.

Idam stressed that the evolving nature of insecurity in the country requires more advanced and technology-driven solutions. He suggested increased investment in surveillance infrastructure, including satellites, CCTV systems, and drones, to strengthen intelligence gathering and enable proactive responses to threats.

He also expressed concern over the welfare of internally displaced persons, alleging that insufficient attention is being given to citizens affected by violence and displacement.

“Resignation is not a taboo; it is a legitimate option that Mr. President must consider in the interest of the safety of Nigerians,” he said.

He further acknowledged that the scale and nature of insecurity in Nigeria present significant challenges for any administration.

“Truth be told, insecurity in Nigeria has assumed a form that even a president like Tinubu, in all fairness, could not simply crush in a single move; it is multidimensional in nature and asymmetrical in operation.

“But the question is: what has Tinubu done differently as a man who saw the situation, prepared for the task, and eventually got the position?”

Idam warned that continued reliance on outdated security methods may fail to deliver meaningful progress, cautioning that citizens could begin to explore legal avenues to demand better protection of their fundamental rights.

“We cannot continue this way,” he added.
