Lagos Red Line Gets 24 New Train Cars — Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Government has expanded its rail infrastructure with the arrival of a new set of 24 train cars aimed at strengthening operations along the Lagos Red Line corridor.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed the development, noting that the additional rolling stock is expected to improve overall service delivery by increasing passenger capacity and reducing waiting times across the route.

“We have received a new set of 24 car trains to strengthen the Lagos Red Line fleet. This will improve capacity, reduce wait times and make daily commuting easier for Lagosians. We remain focused on building a transport system that is efficient and reliable for everyone,” the governor said.

The Lagos Red Line, inaugurated in February 2024, spans approximately 37 kilometres, connecting Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo on Lagos Island. The corridor passes through several high-traffic areas, including Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, and Yaba, making it a vital link in the state’s urban transportation network.

As part of the broader rail master plan, the Red Line operates alongside the standard gauge track managed by the Nigerian Railway Corporation and integrates with the Lagos Blue Line at designated interchange points. This design supports the state’s ambition to develop a seamless, multimodal transport system.

Since its launch, the line has seen growing usage, reflecting the increasing demand for faster, more predictable alternatives to road travel in Lagos, a city often challenged by heavy traffic congestion.

The expansion aligns with ongoing efforts by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority to scale up rail services and extend connectivity to additional communities. Authorities are also exploring plans to expand the Red Line further and strengthen integration with bus rapid transit and water transport systems.
