Customs Officer Paraded Over Lagos-Benin Extortion Video

The Nigeria Customs Service has paraded one of its officers after a viral video surfaced online showing alleged extortion along the Lagos–Benin Expressway.

In the widely circulated three-minute clip, a motorist reportedly used Meta smart glasses to secretly record Customs officers allegedly demanding money from him despite claims that his vehicle documents were complete and valid.

According to the driver, the officers refused to let him continue his journey unless he made a bank transfer of N200,000 over alleged duty-related issues.

Following public backlash, the Nigeria Customs Service announced that disciplinary procedures had already commenced against the officer involved.

Speaking on the matter, CSC Hussaini Abdullahi, representing the Comptroller of the Federal Operations Unit Zone A, said the agency maintains a zero-tolerance stance against misconduct.

“The service wishes to state that any officer found culpable of violating ethical standards will be subjected to appropriate sanction without compromise,” he said.

He also disclosed that the officer had been handed over to the Customs Police Unit for further investigation.

Assistant Provost Marshal Funere William Ebi confirmed that a thorough investigation would be conducted in line with the unit’s mandate.
