China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, has asserted that the global situation would be significantly more dire if the United Nations did not exist.
He further noted that the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), a proposal put forward by China, has arrived at a critical and highly appropriate moment.
Yi pointed out that China’s GGI has already garnered support and formal responses from more than 150 nations and various international organizations.
The minister shared these views during a press conference held as part of the ongoing session of the National People’s Congress.
He said, “The GGI completely meets the expectations of the international community and shows the hopes of people from all countries.”
The minister continued, “The most clear message from the GGI is that the UN’s leading position must be supported, not questioned; its central role must be made stronger, not less important.”
The foreign minister reiterated that the world would face far greater challenges without the UN. He argued that establishing parallel structures outside the UN framework or creating exclusive groups for only certain countries is unpopular and unsustainable.
As a founding member and a steadfast advocate of the UN’s mission, China called on more countries to participate in and endorse the GGI, while working together to enhance the UN’s effectiveness, protection, and overall strength.
