Panic broke out at the Federal High Court in Benin City after a female defendant collapsed and died during proceedings.
The deceased, 52-year-old Titilayo Akindele, was standing trial in a case filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Reports indicate she had been in detention for about three months and appeared visibly ill when brought to court.
Eyewitnesses said she was too weak to sit or stand before suddenly slumping shortly after her case was called, throwing the courtroom into confusion.
Attempts to revive her were unsuccessful, and she was later confirmed dead. The court subsequently adjourned all sittings for the day, while her body was moved to a mortuary.
The incident has raised concerns about detainee welfare and access to medical care, with an investigation reportedly underway.
