A middle-aged man was reportedly killed on Friday following a clash between suspected rival cult groups at Oja-Oba Market in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the development, stating that officers evacuated the victim’s body from the scene using a Hilux patrol vehicle.
The confrontation caused widespread panic in the busy market area, prompting motorists and pedestrians to avoid routes around Emir Road, Ita-Ajia, and the Gambari axis to escape the disturbance.
Many traders hurriedly shut their shops and moved to safer areas as tension spread across the market.
Security operatives deployed within the market swiftly responded to the situation and began chasing down suspected members involved in the clash.
During the operation, one suspect dressed in white traditional attire was arrested and taken to the “C” Division Police Station in Oja-Oba.
According to Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, the clash and arrest have been confirmed, while investigations are currently underway to ensure all those responsible are identified and prosecuted.
