Officials tasked with enforcing environmental sanitation laws in Lagos State have apprehended five individuals for engaging in public defecation.
These arrests occurred during an early morning sanitation enforcement drive, specifically aimed at curbing open defecation and other activities that contribute to environmental pollution.
The operation was conducted in the vicinity of Ebute Ero and surrounding areas on Lagos Island. Sanitation officials commenced their patrol early in the morning to monitor public spaces and ensure adherence to the state’s environmental regulations.
Information regarding these arrests was disseminated by Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, who shared a video of the enforcement exercise on social media.
In his post, he clarified that the sanitation team was conducting its routine patrol to prevent open defecation and other environmental offenses.
According to the commissioner, five individuals were caught violating sanitation regulations during the operation.
Following their arrest, they were transported to the enforcement office situated at Sura-Simpson for further investigation by officials.
After the investigation, the suspects are expected to be transferred to the headquarters of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps in Oshodi. There, they will face prosecution in accordance with the state’s existing environmental sanitation laws.
The commissioner elaborated that this enforcement exercise is part of the Lagos State Government’s broader initiative to enhance public hygiene, safeguard the environment, and maintain a cleaner city for both residents and visitors.
Authorities in the state have consistently cautioned the public against open defecation.
The government has stated that such actions pose significant health risks, harm the environment, and diminish the overall cleanliness of public areas.
Officials also disclosed that at least 275 people have been arrested across various parts of the state for similar offenses.
This statistic is notable, especially given the government’s assertion that approximately 8,710 functional public toilets are available for use throughout the state.
Consequently, the Lagos State Government has urged residents, traders, commuters, and visitors to utilize the available toilet facilities and to support efforts aimed at keeping the environment clean and safe.
According to officials, continuous enforcement operations will be carried out across the state to ensure compliance with sanitation laws and to deter environmental violations.
