A devastating fire broke out early Sunday morning at a gold processing hub in Katsina State, resulting in the destruction of numerous shops and reported casualties.
The blaze began at a time when some residents were still asleep while others were getting ready to start their daily tasks of washing and refining gold.
Alfijir Radio, a local station in the state, reported that a resident who witnessed the aftermath stated that two individuals were believed to have been trapped in the flames.
According to him, one person sustained injuries, and only one body had been recovered by the time the report was filed.
The fire wiped out nearly all the shops supplying the tools and materials essential for the thousands of young laborers working in the local gold processing industry. These supplies are critical for processing gold that is mined from the forested areas to the west of the town.
Dantsuntsu town is situated in the western region of the Batsari Local Government Area in Katsina State.
Past the town’s borders, the landscape consists mainly of vast farmlands that extend toward the Zamfara forest, with no other major settlements in the vicinity.
This forest region is the source where rocks and soil thought to contain gold deposits are mined.
These raw materials are subsequently moved into the town using motorcycles for further processing.
Within the town itself, there are hundreds of grinding machines dedicated to crushing the ore, after which young workers wash the resulting material to extract the gold.
The gold mining trade in this area attracts people from across Nigeria, as well as workers from neighboring nations including Niger, Chad, and Cameroon.
As of the time of this report, no official statement has been released regarding the incident.
