Popular Nigerian singer Joeboy has said that gaining recognition in the mainstream music industry has become more challenging compared to a few years ago.
The Afrobeats star expressed concern for talented emerging artists who are trying to find their place in the industry under the current conditions.
Speaking during a recent interview with Jay On-Air, Joeboy explained that artists today need more than just good music and strong branding to break into the mainstream.
According to him, musicians now have to be active on social media and build a strong online presence, almost like influencers, in order to attract attention.
“I genuinely feel for artists that are trying to go mainstream right now because unlike before, it takes a lot more and it now depends on your personality and all of that. Because right now you have to be on everybody’s faces and all of that.
“Back then, if you have a great music, a great brand behind you and great marketing, the chances of you popping up was really higher. But now, it demands way more than that,” he said.
The singer also encouraged rising artists to make good use of social media platforms such as TikTok as a tool to promote their music and reach a wider audience.
