Nigerian singer CKay has opened up about the personal sacrifices he made to pursue a career in music, including defying his parents and leaving university early.
During a livestream on Twitch with streamer Caterefe, the artist revealed that his decision to follow his passion was not supported at home.
He shared that he left his family residence in Kaduna at 19 and relocated to Lagos in search of better opportunities in the music industry. Along the way, he also dropped out of university while still in his first year.
“My parents didn’t want me to do music so I ran away from home in Kaduna when I was 19.
“I came down to Lagos to chase my passion in music. When I arrived Lagos, I wrote a long letter and sent to my mum via Blackberry.
“Initially, I was staying with one of my friends. But after sometime, I got a one-room apartment. I was making money as a producer working with four different studios.
“At some point, I had to dropped out of university at just 100 level to focus on music,” he explained.
CKay rose to fame with his 2018 track ‘Container’ and later achieved global recognition with ‘Love Nwantiti,’ which went on to break multiple African streaming records.
