Ify Adenuga, mother of Skepta, has explained why she chose to raise her children differently from how she was brought up.
Speaking on BBC World Service, she reflected on her upbringing in Nigeria during the Biafran war, saying it shaped a strict environment she did not want to replicate.
“That’s the promise I made myself, that I’m not going to raise my kids the way I was raised… we’re not going to hit them all,” she said.
Instead, she encouraged freedom and creativity at home, allowing her children to express themselves and explore their interests.
“They can do anything they like in the sitting room as long as they tidy up… And that’s how the idea of music as well started in the house,” she added.
Her approach helped nurture creativity in her children, including Skepta and JME, who both went on to build successful music careers.
