Nigeria recorded a sharp increase in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, imports in June 2026 as supply struggled to keep up with rising domestic demand.
According to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) June 2026 Fact Sheet released on Friday, LPG imports surged by 1,400 percent to 1.5 kilotonnes (KT) per day during the month.
The report also showed that average daily LPG consumption increased by 24 percent, rising to 5.1 KT/d from 4.1 KT/d recorded in the previous month.
Of the total daily consumption, domestic production contributed 3.6 KT/d, while imported supplies accounted for the remaining 1.5 KT/d, highlighting Nigeria’s increased reliance on imports to meet local demand.
The significant rise in imports comes amid concerns over cooking gas availability and price volatility across the country. LPG prices previously climbed above N2,000 per kilogram after selling between N900 and N1,200 before easing to around N1,500 to N1,700 per kilogram, depending on location.
