Airtel Nigeria Suspends Airtime and Data Credit Service

Airtel Nigeria has announced a temporary halt to its airtime and data credit services, which previously enabled eligible prepaid subscribers to borrow airtime or data and repay upon their next recharge.

The decision, disclosed in a statement on Friday, reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to align its operations with evolving regulatory and operational requirements within Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.

According to the statement, issued by the Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, Femi Adeniran, the suspension is part of broader adjustments aimed at ensuring compliance with current industry expectations.

Despite the pause, Airtel reassured customers that access to regular airtime and data purchases will continue without interruption through its existing service channels. The company also noted that the change is not expected to affect overall service quality or network performance.

Offering further clarification, Airtel Nigeria’s Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, described the decision as both necessary and responsible:

“This is a necessary and responsible step as we align our operations with evolving requirements. Airtel Nigeria remains committed to the highest standards of compliance, transparency, and consumer protection, while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem,” he said.

The telecom operator indicated that customers will be informed once there are updates regarding the status or possible reinstatement of the credit service.

This development comes at a time when digital lending and credit-based services within Nigeria’s telecom sector are facing increased regulatory scrutiny, prompting operators to review and adjust their offerings in line with compliance standards.
