Aisha Yesufu Reacts to INEC Statement on Amupitan Account

Activist Aisha Yesufu has criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following its response to a controversial X account allegedly linked to its chairman, Joash Amupitan.

In a post shared on her verified X account on Tuesday, Yesufu expressed concern over what she described as a troubling development, suggesting it raises broader questions about the commission’s ability to conduct credible elections.

“This more than anything shows INEC under Joash Amupitan cannot be trusted to conduct free, fair and credible election. By this desperation to deny something that is so glaring, Amupitan has offered himself as a tool to be used,” she wrote.

Her reaction comes amid ongoing public discussion surrounding INEC’s earlier statement addressing the issue.

The electoral body had announced that the X account in question, which had circulated widely online, was not affiliated with its chairman.

According to INEC, a forensic investigation conducted with the support of independent cybersecurity experts found no evidence linking Amupitan to the account or its posts.

The commission stated that the handle, @joashamupitan, along with the viral message “Victory is sure,” were the result of deliberate digital manipulation and impersonation aimed at misleading the public.

Despite the clarification, the issue has continued to generate debate, with critics questioning the broader implications for public trust in electoral institutions.
