Nigeria recorded over 3.3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) across 14 states in 2023, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The data, contained in the Demographic Bulletin 2023, placed the total number of displaced individuals at 3,381,228. Borno State accounted for the largest share, with more than half of the total—approximately 1.7 million people—affected by displacement.

Benue State and Katsina State followed with 394,567 and 244,380 displaced persons respectively. In contrast, the lowest figures were reported in Gombe State, Nasarawa State, and Kano State.

The bulletin also provided updated population estimates, putting Nigeria’s total population at 221.25 million in 2023. These figures were based on projections from the National Population Commission.

Kano State retained its position as the most populous state in the country, followed by Lagos State and Katsina State, while Nasarawa State and Bayelsa State recorded the smallest populations.

In terms of healthcare expenditure, maternal care accounted for the largest portion of government spending in 2022, representing just over half of both capital and recurrent expenditures.

The report further highlighted trends in antenatal care, noting that coverage increased from 50 percent in 2011 to 67 percent in 2018, before dropping slightly to 63 percent in 2021.

Migration-related data showed that the United Kingdom remained the leading source of remittances to Nigeria in 2023, contributing a total of $12.38 billion.

Meanwhile, the number of recorded trafficking cases stood at 968, with prostitution-related travel identified as the most prevalent category.

Employment statistics drawn from the National Electronic Labour Exchange indicated a steady rise in private sector job listings, which reached 150 in 2023.

However, the report noted that no federal government job vacancies were advertised through the platform during the same period.
