Popular Nigerian content creator Shank has ignited conversations online after opening up about a personal disagreement with his mother over his decision to get tattoos.
In a video that has since gone viral on his social media platforms, Shank recounted how a moment he expected to be emotional took an unexpected turn after he tattooed his mother’s name, “Oluremi,” on his arm.
“The day I tattooed my mum’s name on my arm, she started crying and quoting Bible,” he said.
According to him, his mother strongly disapproved of the tattoo, citing religious beliefs and expressing discomfort with the idea of marking the body.
“She told me, ‘did I ask you to draw my name? I don’t like it. Don’t do tattoo again. God said don’t mark your body,’” he recalled.
Shank explained that he pushed back during the conversation, questioning what he saw as a contradiction in her position.
“I asked her, if you say I should leave my body the way God created it, why do you shave your hair? You that shave hair and me that draw tattoo, we are committing the same sin,” he added.
Reflecting on the experience, the content creator advised young people facing similar conflicts with their parents to prioritise independence when making personal lifestyle decisions.
“Just make sure you’re independent before doing what your parents are not comfortable with,” he said.
Beyond the family disagreement, Shank also revealed a new tattoo on his back bearing the inscription “Lit Gang,” further drawing attention and sparking reactions among fans and social media users.
While some supported his stance on personal freedom and self-expression, others aligned with his mother’s perspective, pointing to cultural and religious concerns surrounding tattoos.
