Love Has Always Been Transactional – Singer Omawumi

Popular Nigerian singer Omawumi has offered her perspective on the growing conversation around the transactional nature of modern romantic relationships, maintaining that such dynamics are not new.

In a recent interview with Pulse, the award-winning artist explained that relationships have always involved a form of exchange, though the expectations tied to them have evolved over time.

Reflecting on how things have changed, she pointed out that what was once considered sufficient to impress a romantic partner has shifted significantly due to modernization and rising living costs.

“Love has always been transactional. Women have always been demanding since the beginning of time. But during my youth, our transaction was different because you can impress your crush with just ice cream and popcorn. But now, it is iPhone,” she said.

According to her, while the idea of “transactional love” is often criticised today, it is partly misunderstood. She suggested that society tends to highlight one side of the equation while overlooking the mutual nature of relationships.

Omawumi noted that women also contribute in various ways that are not always acknowledged in such discussions. At the same time, she argued that some men inadvertently create pressure for themselves by choosing partners whose lifestyles and expectations are significantly higher.
